Cordless Garden Tools
By Gordon Petten
There are varieties of cordless tools used for garden chores. These range from hedge trimmers to lawn mowers. These use batteries to run the engine thus saving fuel costs. With advance of technology, some of these tools use solar energy to run the engine. This saves the owner many expenses thus minimizing costs. Solar powered tools are also environmental friendly because of minimal environmental pollution.

Unlike tools with chords, cordless tools pose less falling risks thus are safer to use. While using tools with cords, there is a high tendency of slicing the cord while working with it. Another advantage of using cordless tools is freedom of moving around with no cord limitation. Use of tools with cords is cumbersome due to cord restrictions. An example includes a cordless hedge trimmer. This tool is used to trim hedges to produce neat shapes. It has a battery as an electricity source.

Modern hedge trimmer use solar energy thus is easy to carry due to its lightweight. One need not use fuel and oil therefore; it is hygienic to use. It also produces less toxic gases in to the air. This reduces aspect of global worming as well as depletion of the ozone layer. Another cordless garden tool includes the lawn mower. Different types of mowers exist to cater for variety of applications. There are mowers ideal for small lawns while others are ideal for large sized fields.

Contemporary types of mower include the cordless electric mower. This model lacks a cord thus is safe to use to minimized falls. It uses a battery thus is heavy to push up hill. This explains why it is ideal for flat lawns and fields approximating 1/3 acre. An advantage of cordless mower is ability to charge the battery after sixteen hours intervals of use. Cordless mowers need have automatic tune-mechanism thus; one need not worry hiring a technician to tune up the machine. This saves one’s money.

For positive results, one should mow lawns with short grass to avoid straining the battery. This saves one from charging expenses. To avoid tall grass limitation, one should mow frequently. In the modern days of environmental maintenance, cordless mowers fit well as environmental conservers to their minimal toxic gas release. Compared to mowers that use fuel, they release minute amount of carbon dioxide as well as carbon monoxide to the environment. These gases contribute in global warming because they cover the earth’s atmosphere causing increased temperatures that result to global warming. These gases are also responsible for depletion of Ozone layer, which protects the earth from harmful sunrays.

Cordless mowers are ideal to use in a neighborhood due to the less extent of noise produced. This protects people from noise pollution, which is a common characteristic of gasoline mowers. On comparison with other mowers, cordless mowers are ideal due to low maintenance costs. On average, cordless mower uses $3to $4 per year on electricity bills on battery charging while a usual mower uses approximately $29 to $30 annually on gasoline. Due to benefits associated with cordless garden tools, people should use them to save money as well as the environment. 6 illnesses contracted from an unhygienic office
by Lavana James
Our offices are vulnerable to disease and illness purely because of the diverse nature of the people who work in them. You and I may make a concerted effort to keep our area of the office clean but how many others are even cognisant of the dangers lurking in the communal coffee mugs and other shared items?

How does old battreys effect the environment? Click the video above

The vast majority of us do not have the time to take our meal and coffee breaks properly and instead we chow down in front of the computer but how many of us bother to clean up afterwards?

There are several food and airborne illnesses brought into your work space unintentionally and some of these bacterial & viral problems can make you and your colleagues critically ill.

a) Acute viral nasopharyngitis, or acute coryza, normally referred to as the common cold, is an unpleasant and unwelcome visitor that, while not life threatening, can make your life a bit of a misery. It is a highly contagious virus that can be spread around your office in a matter of minutes and is transmitted via airwaves through coughing and sneezing or from contact with the infected person’s secretions, either directly or from contaminated surfaces. So after you’ve made some calls on the communal phone or sent a pile of faxes to head office, make for the bathroom and wash those hands!

b) Food poisoning is the common and extremely unpleasant result of improper handling, preparation or storage of food. Good hygiene before and during the preparation of food can reduce the chances of contamination from a broad variety of bacteria, viruses or parasites. Symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and gastroenteritis.

c) Influenza is another infectious disease that afflicts most humans on a regular basis and symptoms include chills, muscles pains and fever. It is highly infectious and can be picked up by direct contact with the infected person or any office equipment they may have used including fax machines, printers, office cutlery and crockery and telephones.

d) Another unsightly and painful viral disease that can be transmitted by direct contact with an infected colleague is oral Herpes. The visible symptoms are called ‘cold sores’ and infect the face and mouth. Poor cleanliness and hygiene in busy offices are known risk factors, so it’s best to take care when using communal glasses, mugs, plates and cutlery.

e) Infectious mononucleosis is better known as glandular fever and this viral disease is highly infectious and debilitating. Characterised by fever, sore throat and fatigue, it is known to affect the victim for prolonged periods of time, sometimes up to 6 months. This illness, together with flu, colds and other common viruses, can be passed around the office with impunity unless high standards of personal and office hygiene are maintained on an ongoing basis.

f) Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious illness in humans and many domesticated animals are natural carriers. Cross-contamination owing to poor hygiene, amongst other things, can result in Salmonellosis, which is a rather nasty form of poisoning - common symptoms include severe abdominal pain in conjunction with fevers, headaches, nausea and vomiting. Leaving meat, poultry or eggs out of the fridge for any lengthy period can increase the risk of salmomella poisoning as the bacteria are more likely to proliferate in warm, humid conditions.

These unpleasant illnesses are some of the dangers that lurk in an unclean work area, especially in a warm environment like South Africa. It is the responsibility of business owners to protect their staff by recruiting a reputable cleaning equipment contractor. Not only will absenteeism drop significantly, but workers will arguably be more productive in a clean, fresh and danger-free environment.

Want to Help Make the World Greener? Use Organic Cleaning Products!

Want to Help Make the World Greener? Use Organic Cleaning Products!
By Drago Marx
Spring cleaning need not be tied to a specific time of the year. All year round, you can have your own version of spring cleaning. This way, you won’t feel like a huge and sudden burden is suddenly on your shoulders and on your to-do list when spring arrives. Also, if you regularly clean things, you’ll be using less amounts of cleaning products, thus helping you to spend less energy.

Although I have to say, your energy is at stake here, but that is another story for another day. But first things first, did you know that when you use organic cleaning products, you not only help Mother Nature and your wallet, but your kids and furry critters as well? Yes, you really do help them too! Want to know why? Well, here are some facts to support that claim.

Your regular cleaning aids usually have a lot of strong fragrances that might help trigger allergies or even asthma. Not only that but they are also riddled with hazardous and/or harsh chemicals like ammonia, alcohol and bleach. Plus, those kinds of cleaning aids are riddled with really strong coloring additives that are harmful to the skin, especially to children’s and not to mention, animals.

So when you were using those kinds of cleansing materials, you were actually putting your kids and your pets at risk. Well, why is that, you may ask? It’s because kids are usually found on the floor playing with toys while your dogs or cats have no choice but to stay on the ground. Unless of course, they sprout wings because they inhaled too much ammonia and transform into mutants - which is another way of saying; dogs have to stay on the ground because that’s how nature intended them to be.

Not only that but when you don’t use natural cleaning products, you also increase the chances of breeding strong bacteria that can resist even the toughest of antiseptics. So it really is for the best that you avoid those cleaning aids and choose greener products.

So now let’s move on to green ideas that will truly help you become a better person inside out. First, have you ever heard of tea tree oil? Surely you have. Some people know that tea tree oil is an effective skin clearing product. But it can also be used as a substitute for bleach.

To make your homemade version of a disinfectant, all you have to do is mix two cups of water with four tablespoons of liquid soap, then add about twenty-five drops of tea tree oil. Use it to clean your tiles, sinks, and even the bathtub. It will leave a nice, clean smell to your bathroom. You can also use this mixture on your kitchen or bedrooms. Just make sure to test on a small surface first so that you won’t end up in a bigger mess than you started with.

Another must-have green cleaning product is vinegar. This all purpose cleaner can help you clean almost anything except marble tiles or countertops that is. But if you have beautiful hardwood floors, then you can use vinegar to restore it to its original glory. Mix half a cup of vinegar with sixty ounces of warm water. If you have a smaller area, you can halve that mixture. Just spray it on the floor and mop away.

These are just some of the products that can and will help you go towards the right direction - the green route. So why not take a clue from your grandmother and use these downright cheap but effective cleaning products? You won’t be sorry!

A healthy and happy environment isn’t polluted with hazardous chemicals. That’s why when it comes to cleaning your home you should use organic cleaning products. Plus, when you use organic cleaning products, you make Mother Nature happy.

How the Latest Development Will Benefit DIY Electric Vehicle Enthusiasts in Australia
By Will Yap
The latest buzz on electric car development in Australia is the intention of Better Place LLC from Palo Alto, California to invest US670 million to build electric charging stations through major metropolitan. This will be a huge boost to the idea of providing electric vehicle (EV) for the masses. The news came at a right time when car owners are facing difficulties to fuel their vehicle and maintain a monthly household expense bill. As long as we are dependent on fossil fuel, we are always at the mercy of the oil cartels. In order for us to reduce our energy bill, we would have to adopt a new kind of energy for our cars which is electricity.

How would the latest electric car development in Australia benefit DIY electric vehicle enthusiast? For the time being, a new EV from a manufacturer is still relatively expensive. Most car owners will prefer to convert their existing gasoline driven car to run purely on electricity. The current challenge faced by home built electric car is the mileage it can cover. An average EV would require about 20 to 25 deep cycle batteries to supply power to the electric motor. On a full charge, the vehicle will able to achieve approximately 150 miles. The actual mileage will depend on the weight of the car, the driving condition, the speed of the car and also the condition of the batteries. For long range commutes, an electric car may not be suitable because of the risk of running out of power and getting stranded on the road.

With multiple electric charging stations, EV owners will able to use their vehicle and drive further distance. The car can stop by a charging station to recharge the batteries just like refueling at a petrol station. This will make owning an EV become more practical. When more people are retrofitting their car to electric, we will see a rise on the demand for electric charging station. When there is a demand, more companies will invest in the electric infrastructure hence bringing us close to a nation with clean and efficient transportation system.

Are high gasoline prices burning a hole in you pocket? Why not consider using an Electric Car. Experience the cost saving benefits of an electric vehicle by exploring Electric Motor Conversion Guides. Being Green, Gardening and Why I Blame my Kid

Being Green, Gardening and Why I Blame my Kid
by Patrick Murray
So often you hear “Its all my parents fault” occasionally I even hear m mother taking the blame for my occasionally caustic personality thought I’m fairly certain I’ve never blamed her for my questionable vocabulary and sharp tongue. Not that she’ shy by any means just a little more diplomatic.
In this case I’m blaming my kid instead of the other way around. It all started in the spring while the youngest was I the second grade. She came home all wound up about needing to save the earth. In fairness I’ve been a pretty green guy for years. I’ve used Organic lawn care products long before I most people had the environment as top of mind. Speaking of organic I’ve bought organic when its available for the past decade and local all my life. What I wouldn’t say is that by any means am I an environmentalist. In fact while I’ve claimed to be a lot of things an environmentalist has never been one of them. Buying green due to a fear of cancer and a shorter life, buying local because I liked the farmers market, the fresher products and the people selling me my veggies. In both cases I did the right thing by accident and not as a conscious act.

So anyway here she comes bouncing along at nine years old excited, full of great ideas and decked out in her often present pig tails. First she tells me how much wood is wasted and placed in land fills rather than being used for other projects or recycles. I don’t question the percentage or amount she quote to me like gospel. All I say is “oh really” before she launches in to more statistical evidence provided by a well meaning science teacher. OK fine she’s been heard I get it and leave the 2×4’s and 1×3’s from the recently disassembled dog cage in the basement and I built poorly constructed, unattractive but completely functional trellis complete with reused untangled kite string for the beans and climbing flowers to crawl up. My mothers father would have been so proud it looked like a contraption he would have built out of whatever was laying around. In his case not because he was an environmentalist or because he had a daughter or granddaughter telling him to “recycle” but because it was there and paid for and there was no reason to get rid of perfectly good wood.

So we recycled the nail laden and hole filled boards into our new creation. Sure money was save because I fully planned to go out and buy lattice or trellis for the plants this year. She proudly helped me finish the building by pound the last nails in, tying off the last strings and the running inside to get her mother to see our monstrosities that were placed in a front garden behind a garden statue that was a gift from her side of the family. So my wife came out, smiled at her reassuringly since she was so proud of the cooked ladder looking things right before asking how quickly the pants would grow to cover them.

I did what any wise husband would shrugged and guessed “June maybe July” being very no committal.

She smiled and told our daughter what a great idea it was and then shot me a look questioning my abilities as a carpenter. Which while I dabble at things is yet another thing I’ve never claimed to be. The beans and flowers have done particularly well. We’ll just chalk it up to a little extra rain and good karma.

So its fall and being one to never waste soil I practice a nontraditional yet completely natural way of composting. Now sure I could buy one of those nifty composting bins to help the process. My mother and father have several of them. Frankly I’m too cheap for that. Instead cutting the plants as they brown put them in pile with old potting soil in an un-planted spot in a garden. Preferably but not necessarily obscured by a large stone statue, rock or large patch of plants where it can break down “naturally”.

So when the fall harvest of sunflowers began we took the heads less the seeds and put them in a spot next to the herb garden. It was the same place I unceremoniously put the manure laden soil mixture from my previous two years indoor lettuce planting. To the left of the bronze garden faerie my the chocolate bell pepper plants (yes I know they aren’t herbs) by the basil, behind the lemon thyme.

And so it sat as as we cut the long green leafy stalks into foot long lengths to they’d fit and more importantly not draw too much attention. Chatting back and forth with out the distraction of TV, video games or computers, quiet quality uninterrupted time. That’s where the lesson accidentally came in more talk about letting plants go to see so we could use those seeds to create new plants for next year. Talk about how such things work in nature and why it works that way. And the finally about how reusing parts of the old plants helps keep the soil rich. See it isn’t about making a political statement, it doesn’t come from a deep need to change the world. It comes from nothing more than good old fashioned horse sense and helping to do what nature does in its own way to improve your own gardening results.

Sure there are missteps along the way like unattractive structures behind the wife’s favorite garden statue. Or like when the mother in law comes over and grumbles at me before the sun comes up about why in the world are my coffee grounds wets and weak. The reason being is she used the can labeled “GROUNDS” meaning used coffee that once its sweet nectar had been consumed served a better purpose in my pile of rotting vegetation, sprinkled on the lawn or as part of my cow manure and compost tea I make to water the occasional growing thing.

But in the end of it all sometimes a little youthful idealism, being a touch cheap, and acting like my old farmer grandfather intersects with lofty ideals without even trying and for this I blame my kid.

A few last words of advice. Mother in laws usually survive weak wet used coffee and even understand and forgive you on occasion. An upfront warning about how the plants might just completely cover the wife’s favorite garden statue for 4 or 5 months if all the seeds take and grow like bad weeds might be warranted. And finally remember those informal compost piles you’ve been hiding through out the gardens well. Well the one out by the Fairy Statue and herbs I’ve got to tell you something about it the bad news is that the compost pile has taken on a new purpose quite accidentally. The soil from the lettuce planters well it’s sort of sprouted with the all the other good stuff we put on top of it, a little rain and some nice cool nights. On the up side we’re going to have a bumper crop of home grown mixed field greens this fall. Well that and it’s all Elise’s fault!
