Bamboo The Next Big Thing?

Everyone knows what bamboo is, a round, brown plant that usually comes from Asia, seen quite often in Asian art and used to make some real cool ornaments. What most people do not know is that it is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth that can reach full height in a single 3-4 month growing season and unlike most trees is ready for cultivation as a construction material within 3-7 years. With this short growing cycle Bamboo is one of natures most sustainable resources that can be used for everything from construction to textiles to water desalination.

Bamboo for Construction
The durability and strength of Bamboo make it an excellent material for construction, a house built from bamboo can be internationally certified as being earthquake and cyclone resistant. One of the more common uses in construction include bamboo flooring, depending on the age of the bamboo when harvested it is said to be three times harder than Oak. Again from an Eco-Friendly standpoint, to get the best quality bamboo flooring takes approximately 6 years, for the same quality in a hardwood it can take more than 25 years.

Bamboo in Clothing
When looking at fabric made from bamboo it is important to ensure that only fabrics made from 100% Bamboo are used. During the chemical process in making “Bamboo Rayon” or “Rayon from Bamboo” many of the antibacterial qualities are lost. As a fabric though Bamboo has some fantastic qualities over Silk and Cotton, it is much more absorbent that Cotton making you feel cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. It is much softer than Silk and with the antibacterial qualities of 100% Bamboo odour causing bacteria does cultivate as much as in other materials.

Bamboo in Food
New shoots of bamboo are edible and are used in many Asian dishes. Across the Himalayas fermented bamboo is an important ingredient in many cuisines. A delicacy in Nepal, alu tama, consists of bamboo shoots fermented in turmeric and oil, and cooked with potatoes then server with rice. The sap of young stalks tapped during the rainy season may be fermented to make ulanzi a sweet wine as well bamboo leaves are also used as wrappers for steamed dumpling which usually contains sticky rice and other ingredients.
With bamboos numerous uses coupled with a short growing cycle, it is no wonder that the bamboo industry is expected to grow exponentially over the next few years.
