Let eBay Help You “Green” Your Home

Let eBay Help You “Green” Your Home
By Harriet Shugarman
“One person’s garbage is another person’s treasures,” or so the saying goes! If recycling and reusing someone’s “gently” used products is something that tweaks your interest, you might want to check out eBay’s new green shopping hub. According to eBay the site highlights: “pre-owned, sustainably-made and resource-saving products, handpicked from eBay.com listings.” Did you know that a year ago, eBay “opened up” their eBay Green Team, from an internal company only initiative, to a program targeted at all of the millions of eBay buyers and sellers?

The program gives eBay users the opportunity to purchase used products in addition to new ones advertised on their site. This concept isn’t new; in fact you can get a lot of “free stuff” on the web or from places and stores in your own neighborhood. Some of the more well know on line organizations that offer “free stuff” for you to take or trade include “Freecycle” and Craig’s list, both of which provide listings of products people no longer need, but feel someone else will value!

A twist in 2010 on the eBay site is that eBay has teamed up with a company called Cooler, Inc in an attempt to showcase for their shoppers the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions. Not only will you be able to find out how much you are reducing your carbon foot print by “purchasing” a gently used product instead of a new one, you will also have the opportunity to buy new products through the Cooler website, from reputable and well know retailers, and have Coolers “offset” your purchase at the same time! The new program is just in the “launch stage.” Look for eBay Green Team ads in April in many of the Hearst family magazines.

It is important to remember that every purchase you make has implications for our environment!

Keeping Our Planet Healthy Through Recycling

The warnings are all clear and well-known; global warming, overflowing landfills, acid rain, are just a few of the aftereffects of our misuse to mother earth.  In many cases we are not recycling because it is the cool or popular thing to do, actually we recycle because it is a necessity for commerce and replenishment of our planet.

When you hear the term recycling come up, you should try and think of the whole idea of – Reduce –Reuse — Recycle

Common sense says that if you don’t need it, don’t buy it.  If it is a must, then get something that can be recycled later on.  What I have mentioned are all concepts that you have heard before, yet there are plenty of people that do not pay attention or realize the bigger picture surrounding their daily lives.  It is not necessary to put recycling logos or signs everywhere to let you know what is or isn’t recyclable, or where you should recycle. It takes a little initiative and slight brain power to figure out what you are doing and the after effects that will take place.  Pay attention to the all the aluminum cans and material that are scattered along the medians on roadways or around your neighborhood sidewalks.

In regards to the bigger picture there are signs such as the snow caps melting that have been visible for years, but are now just an outline as far as we can see.  Another sign of global warming was portrayed in Al Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, which depicted that many cities miles inland would be looking at water front property one day soon without having to move.

Up to this point we have been careless with the way are treating our ecosystem and now is the time to revolutionize.  The days of us leaving our trash behind to rot on our soil are over because we are getting full and have to learn to use less material and more importantly learn to find a way to reuse more of those old goods.

If you have a monthly bill statement many companies allow you to opt-in for paperless billing where they can email you the bill electronically saving millions of paper mailings in the process.  Use linen napkins that can be washed and reused instead of paper based napkins.  These are a few ideas that can go a long way in helping to reduce waste.  If you would like to find out more about scrap metal recycling you can always check out RmlMetals.com for more information.  Just remember, be mindful of what you do and if we all do our part, we will make a big difference for the benefit of everyone’s future.

Nowadays, with all the depletion of natural resources and other major problems such as global warming, recycling materials has becomes a major priority of almost every country in the world. Even while making glass, lot of harmful gases are let into the air and also there is a use of a lot of conventional natural resources. So, recycling glass is the new and economical thing to do and is being done and recycled glass in being used in many houses as well as commercial buildings.

Moreover, recycling glass has not just a trend. It has now become a big business. There is a lot of economical and technical soundness involved in making the use of recycled glass tile. The quality of them depends on the absorption and strength properties. If you are thinking that recycled tiles are the tiles taken out from the old houses and then reused, then you are majorly mistaken. Recycled tiles are actually a completely different concept. Not more than a decade ago, it was strongly believed that recycled material is no good and has very poor quality. However, nowadays, recycled glass tile, even though cheaper than new glass tile is of really good quality.

When glass is recycled and made into tile, the need for landfills reduces and also the variability involved in recycling programs is supported. Nowadays, many people have recycled tile in their house. Many parents buy recycled glass tile for their children and give them paints and then the children show their creativity and then these tiles are placed on the walls and sometimes, on the doors and sometimes in place of windows. Recycled glass tile is used by women in their kitchen for the cabinets and also for placing on the dining table. One more use of recycled glass tile is by using it as a writing pad on the wall.
