Are you a believer of Global warming or not? Or are you one of the cynics yet to be convinced? Well both have a part to play in the Global Warming arena debate. The whole issue is surrounded by facts and figures but when these facts and figures are looked at it is very difficult to prove them with science, so you end up with hearsay.

Global warming from our point of view is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans.

When you observe all the different global warming myths that are published in various publications, online, TV, and radio you will understand the issue with conflicting information. Because of these global warming myths come in many forms it is essential to understand the causes of global warming, and the facts attached to those myths.

MYTH: Water vapour is the most important, abundant greenhouse gas. So if we’re going to control a greenhouse gas, why don’t we control it instead of carbon dioxide?

FACT: Water vapour does trap more heat than carbon dioxide (CO2), but as CO2 levels increase in the atmosphere, they lead to warmer conditions, which lead to more water vapour in the air, which leads to even warmer conditions, thus a never ending cycle. Because of this relationship between CO2, water vapour and climate, to fight global warming nations must focus on controlling CO2.

MYTH: Global warming reduces as the ozone hole shrinks.

FACT: Global warming and the ozone hole are two separate issues.

MYTH: Global warming is not occurring due to some glaciers and ice sheets are expanding and not shrinking.

FACT: In most parts of the world, the shrinking of glaciers and ice caps have been dramatic. The best available scientific data indicate that Greenland’s massive ice sheet is shrinking.

MYTH: So what if global warming is a problem, trying to fix it will affect American industry and workers.

FACT: A well thought out trading program will harness American ingenuity to decrease heat-trapping pollution cost-effectively, jumpstarting a new carbon economy.

MYTH: The cold winters and cool summers that have been happening of late are not the effects of global warming, and are infrequent events.

FACT: While it is true that different areas of country’s have experienced some colder winters here and there, between them the average temperature has ben on the up.

MYTH: We can adapt to climate change. Civilizations have survived droughts and temperature shifts in the past.

FACT: Although it is true that the human race has survived an onslaught of drought and prolonged warmth along with the bitter cold and more, entire societies have collapsed from dramatic climatic shifts.

MYTH: Global warming along with extra CO2 will be beneficial, they reduce cold related deaths and stimulate crop growth.

FACT: Any beneficial effects will be far outweighed by damage and disruption.

MYTH: Global warming is just part of the worlds natural cycle. The Arctic has warmed up in the past as it is doing now.

FACT: The global warming we are experiencing is not natural. People are causing it.

While the global warming myth story is interesting, it does reduce the impact of the facts. But as they say “Truth is stranger than fiction.” The many myths on global warming doing the rounds are based on global warming statistics, just with a different view point.

It is always best, as with everything, to look at the global warming myth with an open mind. There is always two sides to every coin, so explore both before making your full opinion.

Perhaps this article on global warming myth with strike a chord with you and will inspire further reading into the subject.

There’s no question that our planet is warming up. Average global temperatures have risen around the world in the last 100 years, especially in the past 20 years. There are many theories out there when looking for answers to this, but only two are obvious. One of those theories is the idea that the Earth naturally goes through temperature cycles during the course of its existence. Another idea is that we as humans are introducing untold amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and this is causing the planet to heat up.

Regardless of how and why Earth is warming up, it’s happening, won’t stop anytime soon, and may be dangerous in the long run. Maybe it’s human activity or maybe it’s not, nobody will be able to tell us what the exact cause is. However, what we do know is the human population most certainly contributes to the warming of the planet. The good part is we have the power to slow it down and cut our carbon dioxide output down drastically.

There are many things you can do to help our environment and cut down on your carbon footprint, all of which are reductions of energy usage at home and on the road. First and foremost, replace all the light bulbs in all your residencies to the energy-efficient bulbs. This is huge and will save you hundreds of dollars a year on your power bill, thus promoting a cleaner environment. You can also replace your old appliances with newer, energy-efficient models. The same goes for your air conditioner. These are the top 3 ways to cut your power costs at home.

There’s now a 4th and big way to reduce your carbon footprint and power bill, that is, solar panels and wind turbines you can build yourself. You can find guides and manuals online that teach you about everything you need to know. The best part about this is how simple and easy it is to construct a green energy power system in your home. Not many people know about this, but it’s a serious money saver when comparing DIY green energy to professional installations. They cost tens and tens of thousands of dollars. If you’re interested in such projects there’s a popular new site on the internet that will feed you all the information you need.

Finally, and the most effective way to reduce your carbon footprint is to avoid driving your vehicle! Walk, jog, roller blade, or bike everywhere and anywhere you can. Get that blood pumping and the savings of fuel and energy mount up incredibly fast. If you can apply multiple techniques described here, I guarantee your energy costs will drop drastically.

Regardless of what’s causing global warming, we should all be striving to do our part and cut down our carbon footprints. Whether it’s turning the TV off at night or riding your bike to school, the Earth and the people inhabiting it will thank you.

Do it yourself green energy projects are affordable, cost-effective, and can save you thousands of dollars in the long run, not to mention its great for our planet!

Lush green rainforests may be something you’ve pictured only briefly when dreaming about a tropical vacation but did you know that the health of the world’s rainforests has a huge influence on the quality of your daily life?

The rainforest is often described as the “Lungs of our Planet”. The Amazon rainforest alone is responsible for producing more than 20 percent of the oxygen we breath! As an added bonus, by taking in carbon dioxide and giving off oxygen for us to breath, the rainforest actually reduces green house gases and fights global warming.

But sadly, we are losing the earth’s rainforests to feed the world’s ravenous appetite for cheap lumber and agriculture. Check out these statistics. You’re not going to believe them but they’re true!

54 of the world’s 193 countries have already lost 90 percent or more of their forest cover. Rainforests that once covered 14% of the earth’s land surface now cover a mere 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be gone in less than 40 years.
1.5 acres of rainforest are lost every second (that equates to 50 million acres a year: an area roughly the size of Oregon)
Nearly half of the world’s species of plants and animals will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next 25 years due to rainforest deforestation.
We are losing approximately 137 plant and animal species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That equates to 50,000 species a year!
As the rainforest species disappear, so do many possible cures for life-threatening diseases. Currently, 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources. Twenty-five percent of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients! Many more could be developed as only about 1% of tropical trees and plants have been tested by scientists.
Most rainforests are cleared by chainsaws, bulldozers and fires for timber and then are followed by farming and ranching operations. In Indonesia, the current rate of logging could totally wipe out native forests within only 10 years. The forest has already been totally wiped out in countries like Haiti and Ivory Coast where barely a tree can be found anymore.

Even worse is the fact that rainforests do not regenerate as our temperate forests in Vermont do. Once gone, they are gone forever and along with them the wonderful diversity of plants and wildlife that inhabit them.

So now that you know why rainforests are a big deal, you’re probably asking yourself, “What on earth can I do about it?” Well, this is where green consumerism comes in. Everyday when you’re shopping you make choices that effect the health of the rainforest. It’s true. Do you buy products made of soy, beef or wood for example? If so, chances are very good that they are originating in the rainforest and are being produced illegally in violation of local conservation laws.

You can do you part for the environment by purchasing products that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as being green and originating from sustainably managed forests. Ask the salespeople in your favorite stores if their products are certified? Ask where they came from. You may get a few blank stares at first, but eventually you’ll be making a difference. Store owners are going to realize more and more that sustainability is important to their customers. If they are to stay in business, they are going to have to Go Green.

And YOU can make it happen.

Global warming is such a huge topic that it can seem impossible to think how you can do your bit to prevent it from getting worse.

In truth there is a lot you can do to make sure you reduce the effect your actions have on the world around you. It all begins where you are now – home.

Most people use more energy in their homes than they need to. Luckily many of the actions we take in this respect can easily be altered to ensure we use less energy. For example when you put the kettle on to make a mug of tea, how much water do you put in it? Do you put in enough to make the drink you want or enough to fill it to the top?

This is just one example of how energy is wasted every single day in the home. While wasting energy is a big problem, there is more we need to learn and do if we are to prevent global warming from getting any worse.

Fossil fuels are used extensively in our modern society. While we rely on them for heating our homes and providing us with both electricity and gas, they also provide large amounts of carbon dioxide. Unfortunately this is harmful and it is one of the major contributors to global warming.

So in order to stop global warming we need to do more to slow down and reduce our use of fossil fuels of all kinds. You may not think you are contributing much by switching to low energy light bulbs and switching them on only when you need them. In truth you are helping a great deal because you can directly influence the reduction of CO2 going into the atmosphere. If we all made small changes like this, the overall change would be a huge one.

Of course we can also switch to heating our homes in other ways. Solar power – using the heat from the sun to benefit us – is one of the most promising ways to do this. The secret to making the most of this incredible source of energy is to convert the rays from the sun into a usable energy source. Once we do this we can use it in much the same way as we use electricity and gas now.

The benefit that solar power has is that it is a renewable energy source. This means it is constantly there and will not run out – unlike fossil fuels. So by using solar panels we can make a big difference to our heating bills as well as to global warming itself.

So the next time you boil a kettle or switch on a light, take a moment to think about whether there are better ways you could be doing things.

It is estimated that lighting is responsible for emitting significant amount of carbon dioxide in the environment. In fact, it actually consumes as much as 19 percent of electricity that is generated throughout the world. As if this figure is not a big enough problem, another issue lies in how lighting electricity is generated. A lot of electricity is generated from using coal and it accounts for about 39% of the world’s total CO2 emissions. By 2030 (EIA 2007), this figure is expected to reach 43%.

There is a lot of energy that can be saved by simply switching to an energy efficient Par38 halogen bulb or other energy efficient lighting technology such as compact fluorescent or LED. These are well-known alternatives for high wattage direct illumination and spot lighting needs. The “Par” is an abbreviation of parabolic aluminized reflector, a material that is wrapped around the lamp. There are a lot of choices and alternatives if you are interested in buying a Par 38 halogen bulb.

Energy-Efficient and Long-Lasting

The white spectrum produced by the Par38 halogen bulb is perfect for anyone who needs direct illumination. This kind of bulb also has longer lifespan and produces brighter lighting compared to an incandescent source. It also maximizes the amount of energy it utilizes by providing more illumination per watt so efficiency is achieved. Recently, technology has improved to create a PAR38 Halogen that emits the same lumens at a fraction of the wattage consumption.

Certain types of lighting become dull or faded over time since it can no longer provide optimum performance. But you don’t need to worry about this issue if you use Par38 halogen bulb because it is specifically designed to give maximum efficiency throughout its lifetime. This option is available in 12 volt size as well as 120 volt size. A step-down transformer is required if you want to lower the voltage.

Take note that because Par38 halogen bulbs tend to get hotter compared to ordinary halogen lighting, it is not recommended for usage in ceilings that are lower than 8 feet. There should also be enough distance from the bulb to a temperature-sensitive item if it is being showcased. Otherwise, Par38 halogen bulb is safe, energy-efficient, and affordable for a variety of needs.

Be sure to check a reputable store to find a Par38 halogen bulb that is best suited for your needs. It is not difficult to find a good selection if you visit an established lighting store. In fact, the amount of available choices can be confusing because everything is a good deal. For any questions or queries, be sure to contact the company’s support staff to get individual answers. Each person, organization, or government agency has a unique need. Ask the expert for advice to get the best Par38 halogen bulb.

Paper products are used all the time in our society, and that means more trees
are being cut down to keep up with that demand. The trees live off the carbon
dioxide that is in the air we breath. As their numbers are depleted, there will be
more carbon dioxide remaining in the oxygen we breathe.

There are many ways in which you can cut back on the use of paper both at
home and at work. If you get a ton of junk mail each week it can become a chore
to weed through all of it. Go online and sign up to opt out of receiving it that way
the amount of paper waste in your home will be reduced by about 1/3 without you
having to do much about it.
Find out which of your accounts you can get an online statement for. This way
you further reduce the amount of paper that comes your way. Log on each month
and find out what you owe as well as checking over your statements. If
necessary print what information you do need instead of the entire statement.

You can also pay bills online which will save paper in the areas of checks and
envelopes. It only takes a few minutes to set up such accounts and then you can
do the process each month. If you don’t want to mess with that each month then
have the bills taken directly out of your checking account. The fact that this is so
convenient is also a terrific benefit that you will certainly want to take advantage
of.

Try to buy notebooks, greeting cards, and other products that you see have been
made from recycled paper. You can even use napkins and paper towels that
have been recycled. Keeping clothes in your kitchen though is often a great
saver of paper towels.
Encourage everyone at your office to cut back on the use of paper when they
can. In fact, you should talk to your boss about implementing some effective
ideas. For example there can be a pile for waste paper that everyone can use for
various needs. The back sides can be used to take down phone messages and
other correspondence that doesn’t have to look professional.

With reports, make sure information is printed on both sides of the paper. It will
still look very professional and it will cut the amount of paper used for the process
in half. It is important to double check the information you plan to print as well
first so you don’t view it, see a mistake, and then have to print it again.

Another one down see you in Part 5 of 7
Regards,Robbie Martin

Sustainability in Easy Terms

How do you define sustainability? There will be a wide array of answers if you ask that question to a few different people. Many people will define it as not messing up the planet for future generations. Sustainability has as much to do with making good lifestyle choices, supporting your local village or community and enhancing long term economic strength as it has to do with being environmentally conscious and aware. ‘Sustainable’, as opposed to the term ‘Green’ promotes a much wider ranging set of values and objectives than purely environmental protection.

If you take a look on Google, you’ll find many definitions around the term. These include:

To keep in existence, to nourish and maintain. To prolong.

A state or a process that can be maintained indefinitely.

To be able to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

This really shows us that, as with all things, if you fail to take care of something it becomes unreliable and eventually prone to failure. Humans have certainly not looked after the planet that well, but a question that we are all asking is, ‘Can the damage be reversed?’

Global warming is one of the big questions and debates at the moment. The cynics deny that it is related to human activity, stating that it is just a cyclical event, many of which have occurred over the course of the planets history. The proponents of the ‘global warming’ hypothesis state that is is humans that are responsible, emissions of carbon dioxide, the primary ‘ greenhouse gas’ have created a gas layer that reduces the ability of the planet to breath and release heat.

Whichever is correct, and it’s certainly likely that both are to some extent, I feel that advocating the ‘precautionary principle’ is surely the best way to deal with the problem. The ‘precautionary principle’ involves taking action anyway because we are unsure if our activities have caused the problem. It’s a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach. Reducing greenhouse emissions is going to do the planet good, so lets play it safe and take some action.

We are unlikely to know in our lifetimes whether taking this action will avert environmental disaster, but I know that on a personal level, I’d feel better to know that we made some attempt, rather than just discarding the idea completely.

To ensure that global warming does not become a more serious problem everyone needs to ensure they are doing their bit for the environment. So how can you help? Clear Environment, a highly environmentally concious office clearance company have written five quick ways for you to help save the environment (and your money) every single day.

1. Use heating and air conditioning resourcefully

Ensuring that you use your heating and air conditioning resourcefully could save up to 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide every year. This is a lot easier than many think, for example, by simply insulating the key areas where your home looses heat are insulated then you are less inclined to turn up both the thermostat and the air conditioning. Keep your windows shut and ensure that draught prone areas such as underneath doors are effectively covered.

2. Use efficient light bulbs

Many do not consider light bulbs to be a massive waste of energy, however they are a major offender. Just think about how many times a day you flick that light switch and often do not turn it off until you get into bed, if at all. There is now a wide range of energy efficient light bulbs available in all major retailers, known as compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. As well as switching to more efficient bulbs ensure you turn of the lights whenever you leave the room, it’s not that hard turning it on again when you walk back in the room!

3. Be a sensible driver
The government often campaigns to get more people using public transport – the issue with this is that not everyone has access to public transport easily, especially during winter months. When you can, drive less. When you can’t, ensure your tyres are properly inflated and that you keep your revs to a minimum. Not only will both of these be helping you be helping save the environment – but you will help save yourself petrol.

4. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The ‘three R’s’ are something that most almost everyone could improve on and stand as general guidelines for most ways to save the environment. The first is reduce, you can reduce waste by only buying what you need and not buying in excess. The second ‘R’ relates to the reuse of products were you can – simple things like reuse of plastic bags could go a long way. The last of the ‘three R’s’ is recycling, contact your local council and get information on what they recycle – they will be more than happy to assist you anyway that they can.

5. Use energy conscious companies

Being an energy saver yourself is no good if you are paying somebody else to do work that diminishes your efforts. Their are plenty of environmentally friendly start up companies out their, for example clear-environment.co.uk , who provide environmentally friendly office clearance and even practice the ‘three R’s’. Always search for an environmentally friendly company before going directly to someone who doesn’t take good care of their surrounding earth.

Clear Environment provide environmentally friendly office clearance nationwide in the UK.

In the U.S., around twenty percent of all greenhouse gas emissions come from the vehicles we drive on a daily basis. This in effect is contributing to climate change, disease and pollution. So if you consider yourself to be environmentally conscious, then you’ve got make some changes in your driving habits. And while most people can’t afford to throw down the cash for a hybrid these days, that’s perfectly okay; you just need to make a little extra effort if you want to reduce your car’s carbon footprint.

1. Use less gasoline. Every gallon of gas you use produces about twenty pounds of carbon dioxide which is absolutely terrible for the environment. You can easily reduce your usage by utilizing public transportation, car pooling and telecommuting when you can. Also consider bicycling. It’ll be great for the environment and you might even lose a few pounds.

2. Drive the speed limit. You car is most efficient at or below sixty miles per gallon. So avoid speeding down the highway on your way to work, maybe even go a little under if you can.

3. Don’t let your car idle. Even if it’s just for a few minutes, always shut your car off. Also, avoid warming up your engine. Most relatively new models don’t require it anyway.

4. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Check your car manual if you aren’t sure what pressure is appropriate. Having properly inflated tires is another easy way to make your car more fuel efficient.

5. Replace your headlights with automotive led lights. This will conserve energy and they will last far longer than your average bulb.

6. Perform all routine maintenance. This will make your car much more fuel efficient and it will also keep your car performing at its best.

7. Don’t carry anything unnecessary in your car. Carrying around heavy objects in your backseat or in your trunk will add to the weight your engine has to move. This is a great excuse for you to clean out your car and get better gas mileage.

These are just a few things you can do to reduce your car’s negative impact on the environment. Make sure to do plenty of research and find other ways in which you can make a difference. Even simple lifestyle changes can help fight global warming.

Today, hardly anyone uses the conventional television anymore. Instead, most
people have shifted to flat screen televisions. Did you know that the flat
screen panels add to the global warming? In fact, they cause more damage than a
high powered electricity generating coal factory would.

The flat-screen televisions are manufactured using a greenhouse gas known as
nitrogen trifluoride. They are so much in demand, that yearly about four
thousand ton of gas is being released.

This particular nitrogen trifluoride is a highly potent gas and has 17,000 times
more effect than carbon dioxide on the environment. Most of the them use gas
inside the panel to create sharper images. This gas is nothing but nitrogen
trifluoride. This greenhouse gas remains in the atmosphere for 500 years and
sometimes more.

Unfortunately, it was too late before the scientists found this out, and the gas
is not even restricted by the Kyoto Protocol unlike other greenhouse gases.
Today, the flat-screen television is the only form of television that is
available in the electronic market. So, every time we switch on our television
we are polluting the environment.

Though this discovery was made very late, it is never too late to make
amendments. There are two technologies in flat screen monitors. One uses the
gases, the other uses graphical coding. The latter model may use more power but
it is less polluting. Therefore, it is advisable to opt for a flat screen
monitor that uses graphical coding if you want to help the environment.
