It has not probably escaped your notice that environmental issues have captured people’s interest. You can probably say that this is not surprising considering the fact that people are finally experiencing the effects of decades of environmental abuse. Mother Nature is indeed lashing back. Environmental debates are fairly common these days. Being a chef does not excuse you, however, from getting involved. You create your own ecological footprints and you are accountable for them.

Environmental issues generally fall under three categories – bizarre global climate changes, excessive use of resources, improper waste management.

Bizarre Global Climate Changes

There are numerous environmental issues but the one thing that you have likely heard people talking about is the bizarre climate that the whole world is experiencing. The effects of these weird climate changes have caused devastating damages, taking lives and properties. Unfortunately, there are many factors that contribute to climate change. Many of these factors are largely created by man.

Excessive and Abusive Use of Environmental Resources

There are many environmental issues that fall under this category. You have deforestation, land degradation and land being stripped off of fossil fuels. These three are just some of the many problems that arise from abusive use of environmental resources.

Improper Waste Management

Many environmental issues have resulted from people’s inability to manage their waste or trash properly. This category basically embraces all kinds of pollutions caused by humans which include air, water and land pollution.

Resolving Environmental Issues Your Way

It’s certainly a good thing that many people are getting involved in correcting environmental issues. As a chef, you can do a lot of things in order to reverse the damage that has been done to the environment. You can make positive contributions. Being environmentally friendly does not end with disposing potato peelings properly. As a leader, you can influence people to be more environmentally conscious.

Adopt an Environmental Cause

If you own your restaurant, you can get your staff or employees to volunteer for environmental causes. Since you are working in the food industry, perhaps you can get your employees to volunteer for a food feeding program.

You can also adopt environmental programs and support them. For instance, you can adopt a program which aims to provide clear water to many places in Africa or you can support one project that is designed to protect the rainforest in the Amazons. Support any environmental conservation schemes. Try to raise funds if you can in order to support a conservation program.

Recycle!

Another way of helping the environment is to adopt a recycling program in your workplace. You should also make sure that you get recyclable supplies. If you are going to purchase disposable dishware, you should get recyclable or biodegradable ones. Encourage your staff or employees to do the same.

Cut Back on Gas Consumption

There are also various ways of cutting back on gas consumption. You can also get your employees involved in your save-your-gas scheme. You can offer incentives to employees who choose to leave their cars at home. In fact, this method is proving effective among hospitality entrepreneurs. Aside from encouraging your staff to take the bus, you can also get them to set up a carpool system.

Another way of saving gas and cutting back on delivery expenses is to impose minimum order requirement. This will discourage small deliveries and unnecessary use of gas.

Prefer Local Producers

The food service industry has finally recognized that they have a social responsibility to support local producers within their community. If you choose to purchase products from local farmers, not only will you be able to help the local economy, you will also help in minimizing environmental wastages.

Spread the Word

You need to spread environmental consciousness. You can start with the people around you – your employees perhaps. Challenge people to care. Over time, you will eventually get people involved. Employ people who are environmentally conscious – people who purchase organic products and who boast of eco-friendly practices.

You can also train your staff and teach them how to be more eco-friendly. After all, you will reap the benefits as well. You will likely notice a considerable decrease in energy consumption once your staff learns how to conserve energy.

You can also spread the word and influence your guests, customers and clients. You can offer rewards or incentives to guests who adopt eco-friendly measures in order to address environmental issues. You don’t have to stop with your employees. Ideally, the more people you educate, the better it will be for the environment.

Its estimated that every year over 2 million laptops and computers are thrown in the bin only to end up at landfill where they are causing big problems to the environment. Laptops contain many toxic materials and flame retardants which will take hundreds of years to break up at landfill and in the meantime will cause many problems to the environment. These environmental problems include chemicals from inside the laptops leaking into the soil and later polluting ground water or even our own water supplies. Also by recycling old and unwanted laptops less natural resources have to be used in order to produce brand new ones.

In order to help the environment many websites have recently launched that offer electronic gadget and laptop recycling services. Rather than your old laptop cluttering up your home or a landfill site it can be sent in to one of these recycling services who will check it over and in exchange will send you a cash payment. They accept many models of laptops even broken ones can be sold in return for a reduced price. Many laptop recycling services will also provide a free courier collection in order to speed up the process.

When buying a new laptop or computer we must all start considering the implications that throwing the old one in the bin can have on climate change, use of natural resources and the damage that is beintg done to the environment. If everyone has to recycle laptops and other electronic devices correctly then the world would be a much better place for us all to live.

Do you have your own definition of a Green Lifestyle? Are renewable or sustainable energy, climate change and environmental pollution on your short list? Are you considering a shift to a greener lifestyle and making changes in your home and your thinking to bring you into more harmony with the environment?

It is time to take action on your thoughts. Today is the best day to begin to invest in a green lifestyle, eco-friendly products and you?

Whether you agree or disagree with everything you hear and read about the greening of America, you can definitely agree upon the fact that a lot of time, money and effort is being dedicated to this endeavor.

What is a Green Lifestyle?

Everyone has their own definition of the greening of America and what living a green lifestyle should look like. And, sometimes those definitions are vastly different and at opposite ends of the spectrum.

My rather simple definition of a Green America based on an ancient Feng Shui principle is: people who live in, support and replenish the environment and an environment that supports people through providing a life giving atmosphere and resources in order that they both prosper.

The second definition of a green life could be living the Feng Shui lifestyle. The principles of the original Form School of Feng Shui are all about creating your home and life to be in complete harmony with your surrounding environment. Feng Shui is about uncluttering and using positive energy in your surroundings so you and your environment can enjoy abundance.

If you think about it, Planet Earth some 3000 years ago when Feng Shui got its start was in perfect balance. To keep it somewhat uncomplicated, Earth experienced day and night, heat and cold, wet and dry over a yearly cycle. It had oceans and land masses, mountains and valleys, barren land and crop supporting land.

The ancient Chinese civilization learned to work with their environment and to manage the resources so they could live in harmony with their environment. They altered their environment only by cultivating the land and building shelter to survive. When they learned how to position their homes in harmony with the energy forms provided by the environment such as trees, hills, rivers and maximum warmth from the sun in the South they began to thrive.

Feng Shui Today

Since most people would not turn the clock back 3000 years to recapture that pristine environment, there are a number of things you can do today to live in better harmony with the environment.

Rather than think about the environment from a global perspective which is out of reach for most, look around your home to find those things within your reach that you can control and do something about today. Unclutter, recycle and use eco-friendly products indoors and out. Care for and nurture your home and Mother Earth as you would care for yourself and your family.

Preserve, Replenish and Unclutter

In Feng Shui, one of the best ways to improve your personal environment is to make sure positive energy enters your home. That means you need to unclutter the outside too including the walkway leading up to entrance of your home.

When landscaping and gardening, remember to use eco-friendly products that are good for the plants, the birds and the earth. Then, focus on preservation and replenishment care in the planning process. If you have large healthy mature trees, find ways to protect and care for them as they provide you protection from the sun and heat plus help maintain the planet’s healthy atmosphere.

If plants are overgrown, prune them. If they are unhealthy, even dead remove them immediately because they are sending negative unhealthy energy into your home. Plants like this should always be promptly removed and replaced to provide a healthy energy environment surrounding your home. Both you and the environment benefit.

In a home case study, positive energy was not reaching the front door because plantings were old and overgrown causing the walkway to be dark. Plus the large old tree on the left was lifting the sidewalk more than six inches in at least two places making it unsafe and exposing the home owners and guest to injury and litigation.

Saving the tree was their number one priority. The Feng Shui solution was to create a wide S curve walkway to accommodate the roots of the tree and to encourage positive energy to meander into the house and linger spreading abundance throughout. The design not only opened up the walkway so it wasn’t so dark, it also made it safer and more welcoming to guests and for new energy to enter the home.

The final step was to unclutter the area by removing decaying old plants and properly pruning the others to encourage new growth for the plants as well as the homeowners. A few colorful new plantings were added to further energize the welcoming energy. To see the before and after pictures click here: http://www.energy-by-design.com/ArticlePhotos.html .

There are easily thousands of other things you can do and products you can buy that lend themselves to a greener lifestyle. The Feng Shui suggestions are about removing and controlling the clutter in your personal environment which provides you better energy. And, recycling and using more eco-friendly products provides the environment more positive energy rather than having to deal with more waste.

By following some of these simple suggestions you’ve improved your quality of life and that of the environment. Plus, you are preserving and or replenishing the environment when caring for its plants and trees – living a Green lifestyle today that was cool 3000 years ago.

You may consider that climate change and fixing environmental issues is a huge undertaking and that you as an individual can do nothing to assist with keeping our planet green. Well there are a large number of things individuals can do, to ensure that our environment stays clean, green and sustainable.

Firstly, lets look at your home. Do you consume large amounts of electricity and water? Do you think you could reduce your water consumption? Could you survive with having half the amount of shower time? Is your garden suitable for your climate, or does it consume large amounts of water?

These are some of the areas where water savings can be made and therefore reducing your water costs and also saving the environment. The recommended level of water consumption is approximately 140 litres per person per day. Do you exceed this level?

Look at ways of reducing your water consumption. Take shorter showers, turn the water off when brushing teeth and only back on to rinse off. Plant drought resistant plants, or suitable plants for your climate that don’t require large amounts of water. Remember if you reduce your water consumption you also reduce your water rates and taxes, thereby saving you money.

Next let look at electricity consumption and whether or not you can reduce your energy needs just by managing the lights around your home, and turning off appliances that are not in use, just don’t leave them on stand-by. There is a wide range of energy efficient appliances and star rating systems that let you know which appliances and devices are energy-efficient and to what level. When buying new appliances, choose an appliance that displays high star energy rating that will not consume as much power as other models.

Have you replaced all your light bulbs with energy efficient ones? Just by replacing the light bulbs in your household will reduce your energy consumption. Also look at turning lights off, as soon as you leave a room and perhaps not have as many lights on in your home. Yes, it might be nice to light up your garden at night, but unless you are entertaining is it necessary to have them turned on every night? Think about the money you will save, just by saving electricity in your home. And remember electricity is set to increase by 30% over the next few years and possibly more once the carbon tax is introduced in Australia.

Other ways of assisting the environment is to choose products and services that have been certified green and environmentally friendly. You don’t need to stop purchasing items, but just choose products that assist with the environment. Here is a list of things you can do which are easy to achieve and all assist with keeping our environment clean and green:

Purchase your fruit and vegetables from local markets and choose organic produce. Avoid buying fruit and vegetables from the major supermarkets where the produce has been stored for up to 6 months using additional electricity and a range of chemicals to keep it fresh.
Reduce your electricity consumption and offset the costs by buying green power which comes from renewable energy sources such as solar power, wind power and even natural gas.
Reduce your water consumption and utilize water savings devices where possible.Look for green products when buying. Green products include products and services rated as carbon neutral. Carbon neutral products and services have offset their carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits in green projects and schemes.
Buy organic foods, skin care and personal care items. If we increase the demand of organic products not only will the cost come down but the range and variety of products will increase and eventually become mainstream.
Only use re-useable shopping bags. Never use plastic ones, or if you do make sure you use them again as garbage bags. Never let plastic bags be disposed of in water ways.
Consider walking or riding your bike to the shop instead of driving. Not only will your health and fitness benefit from this, it will save the environment, reduce wear and tear of your vehicle and save you money as well.

There is a wide range of things that you can do, without having to change your habits too much, that assist in keeping our environment green and clean. Do you want your children to live in a healthy environment or one that is polluted? It is the little things that matter and if we all contribute equally we can make a change. We can assist in climate change and can make a difference to our environment.

Over the coming years, you will also see a range of Green Energy Rating systems that will assist in helping you make the choice to choosing green products. If you want to know more check out http://www.greenmarketplace.com.au for more information and articles on green products and services and ways to save the environment.

Many people ask how burning firewood impacts the environment. Usually their biggest concerns are with the ideas of deforestation and climate change. In the short term, we know that burning wood can make things smoky. But for the long term affects on climate change, we can only speculate.

The problem of smoke can be manageable. Much of the smoke problems are caused by inefficient burning. With modern wood stoves you should be able to burn wood with very little or no visible smoke most of the time. This can be accomplished by burning dry wood with small hot burning fires. Using smaller pieces of wood can go a long way here.

In some parts of the world, burning wood does contribute to deforestation. But in first world countries like the USA, Australia and most of Europe, burning wood does not contribute to deforestation in most cases. In most cases when firewood is harvested, trees are replanted or grow back naturally from seed, or with some species new trees sprout back from the stumps after the trees are cut down.

Much of the time firewood is produces from forest wastes that come from harvesting trees for making other products like lumber. Or it is cut from excess trees that were thinned to make the remaining trees grow better. In some cases cutting trees for firewood can actually enhance forest health or utilize material that would go to waste otherwise. Of course there are exceptions and some people will harvest firewood irresponsibly. It all comes down to consumers choosing responsible sources.

For climate change and greenhouse gases, firewood is considered to be carbon neutral. Burning wood is part of the natural carbon cycle. When a tree dies naturally ,the wood decays or gets burned by wildfire. In both these processes, the carbon in the tree is released into the atmosphere as CO2. Since the trees that grow in its place absorb CO2 as they grow, there is no net increase in CO2. This is no different if it happens naturally or if you burn the wood in your stove. So as far as we know, burning wood does not contribute to greenhouse gases the way burning fossil fuels do. Of course this is only when firewood is harvested responsibly.

This April the fantastic UK AWARE exhibition will be taking place at London Olympia. UK AWARE is the UK’s only green and ethical lifestyle exhibition, which invites normal people to come together, with a view to making a difference to climate change.

As a largely social enterprise UK AWARE unites businesses, organisations and individuals and gives them a forum to share advice on living and working more sustainably, without having to sacrifice lifestyle or comfort.

Various products and services are exhibited over the 2 day event – all of which showcase ways to help to live a greener lifestyle. Areas covered include all sorts, from sustainable fashion and beauty to green motor-vehicles. And it isn’t just small, independent businesses choosing to take advantage of this eco-opportunity. More established companies and charities, including BT and Actionaid, are also on hand to advise the 15,000 visitors expected to attend the event.

This year visitors will be treated to all manner of ingenious innovations and developments, including Hubcap Creatures (sculptures made from recycled hubcaps), Bubblehouse Worms (wormfarms that ‘promote global worming’), Twinkes (futuristic light electric/pedal powered mobiles) and many more.

UK AWARE is now in its third year and, as the UK’s only green and ethical lifestyle exhibition it has thrived where all others have failed. As such it attracts both visitors and exhibitors from far and wide. So the issue they faced was where to put them all…

UK AWARE are the first to admit that hotels are notoriously bad for the environment but the Campaign Against Climate Change also bemoans the situation. In 2007 they reported that hotels were responsible for around 2% of the UK’s carbon emissions. Just thinking about the amount of energy wasted on air conditioning, in hotel kitchens and thanks to the enormous amounts of laundry a hotel gets through – is enough to make your eyes water.

Many hotel chains are trying to rectify things but progress is relatively slow. So the organisers of UK AWARE have put forward an alternative solution for out-of-towners who are keen to attend the event, Crashpadding. They suggest that people visit Crashpadder.com to find accommodation that is not only eco-friendly but budget-friendly too.

The basic premise of Crashpadder – along with other sites like it – is that it is preferable to stay with a friendly local in their spare room than to book a bed in an uncomfortable hostel or an over-priced, environmentally unsound hotel.

The science behind it is pretty simple, while hotels have to maintain rooms and services that are often left unoccupied and wasted, people’s homes are always in use and as such it makes very little difference to the environment to pop an extra person under the same roof.

The principle of opening your home to strangers in the spirit of good will and collaboration obviously ties in with the principles of UK AWARE. Both are hoping to make the world a better and friendlier place, and allow us to move through it in as positive a way as we possibly can.

To find out more about the UK AWARE event, arrange tickets or even book an exhibition slot for your business or organisation why not visit the UK AWARE website, www.ukaware.com.

“One person’s garbage is another person’s treasures,” or so the saying goes! If recycling and reusing someone’s “gently” used products is something that tweaks your interest, you might want to check out eBay’s new green shopping hub. According to eBay the site highlights: “pre-owned, sustainably-made and resource-saving products, handpicked from eBay.com listings.” Did you know that a year ago, eBay “opened up” their eBay Green Team, from an internal company only initiative, to a program targeted at all of the millions of eBay buyers and sellers?

The program gives eBay users the opportunity to purchase used products in addition to new ones advertised on their site. This concept isn’t new; in fact you can get a lot of “free stuff” on the web or from places and stores in your own neighborhood. Some of the more well know on line organizations that offer “free stuff” for you to take or trade include “Freecycle” and Craig’s list, both of which provide listings of products people no longer need, but feel someone else will value!

A twist in 2010 on the eBay site is that eBay has teamed up with a company called Cooler, Inc in an attempt to showcase for their shoppers the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions. Not only will you be able to find out how much you are reducing your carbon foot print by “purchasing” a gently used product instead of a new one, you will also have the opportunity to buy new products through the Cooler website, from reputable and well know retailers, and have Coolers “offset” your purchase at the same time! The new program is just in the “launch stage.” Look for eBay Green Team ads in April in many of the Hearst family magazines.

It is important to remember that every purchase you make has implications for our environment!

Climate Mama is an online climate change education, advocacy and information site. We want you to feel empowered, that you are doing what you can to ensure that the world they inherit is a world that is as precious, as vibrant, as healthy and as alive, as the one you grew up in.

With the New Year only just beginning, many people have made or are making their New Years resolutions for the year ahead, but how many of them will be as important as helping to save the world?

With landfills in the UK increasingly getting more and more full, recycling should be a priority for all of us living in this country, as the more products we can recycle, the less we need the landfills and the more we help to save world from the ever increasing threat of climate change.

Recycling is the process of taking old materials and making them into new, which means the product can theoretically have an unlimited lifespan, or, definitely used more than once or for more than one purpose once used.

Recyclable materials include many kinds of materials, including –

Glass Paper Metal Plastic Textiles Clothes Electronics

Normally, when you recycle a product it will not be used for the same reason again, it will normally be turned into something different. This is due to the complexities or cost of making the same product again, but when you recycle it for a different use, that is when recycling really comes into its strong front, as this is not only cost effective but also has a massive green impact.

The UK does seem to be quite behind its neighbouring countries when it comes to recycling. According to a DEFRA survey back in 2004, out of 30.5 millions tonnes of waste that was produced in the UK, only 17% was collected for recycling. Some other European countries at the time were comparing to well over 50% of their collected waste being recycled, which is a massive difference.

As the worlds population continues to grow, the focus of importance on recycling become even more important, because we are running out of space with regards to landfills and the impact of reusing materials means there is less strain on the existing stock of raw materials the world currently has.

Many people are often disheartened with recycling because of the amount of time they think it will take. All UK councils now provide some sort of recycling program, meaning you do not have to visit your local tip to recycle anymore, you can do it from the comfort of your own home. If more people in the UK begin to recycle, the impact will be felt for many years to come, as if every generation becomes used to the fact that recycling is the norm, then more and more people will do it.

Home and Office recycling bins are a fantastic way of using recycled products to collect even more recycled products, with some of these bins being used for the commercial and domestic market, but all service the same purpose, to make sure that all of the population in the UK start recycling and help to have a positive impact on the environment, not only in the UK, but for the World.

Andrew Bartle is the Managing Director of Acorn Office Accessories LTD.
Acorn Offices only sells products which are manufactured from sustainably sourced materials, which also contain a high percentage of recycled paper fibres.
To minimise ‘manufacturing miles’ all products are made in the UK. From site of manufacturing to our distribution centre is 99 miles (Chinese Imports typically 11,000 miles)

It is time to rectify the mistakes of past unplanned development. Effective and quick solutions are required for the revival of the environment of the Earth. This is not going to succeed with the efforts of just one person. Everybody has to take conscious steps to ensure sustainable living conditions.

Role Of The Online Forums

This is where green blogs enter in the picture. These forums suggest green solutions to abate or correct the problems that have upset the environmental balance of the Earth. Green solutions are an emergency response to minimize the negative affects of human activity. All that is required is a small change in lifestyle. Most of the emissions that cause global warming are life-style emissions. It is important to modify the way of living instead of exploiting the existing resources leading to environmental repercussions and a struggle for natural resources.

There are some simple but vital tips that you can consider for a cleaner planet:

* Why go for strong toxic chemical cleansing solutions? Use vinegar, baking soda, and lemons as cleansing agents for your house. These can keep your home clean on a minimal budget minus the harsh chemicals in some cleaners.
* Carry your own reusable bags made of cotton, hemp, paper, or nylon instead of plastic bags.
* Try to stick to organic food. These are healthier and contain no harmful chemical like the genetically modified products.
* Many experts on climate change have called for a sharp reduction of GHF emissions to 40 percent below 1990 level by 2030. This can be done by an increased use of renewable energy sources, implementing green building policies and diverting waste from landfills. Changing land use and transportation patterns would also check the emission output. Encouraging the use of green fuel and the use of bicycles to work are one of the ways of bringing down pollution levels.
* City buildings and traffic lights can use energy efficient light emitting diodes (LED-s) to reduce the level of CO2 output.
* Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL-s) are a great way to conserve electricity.
* Renewable means of energy can be harnessed by purchasing wind, solar, and geothermal power. It should be the aim of all governments to generate at least 35 percent electricity from clean sources of energy by 2020.

Some of the green solutions are expensive. What is more important is to subsidize them, to make them accessible to everyone. It is everybody’s responsibility to contribute their own small way.

The impending doom brought about by climate change has got people worrying about the future. Will the Earth be habitable in 50 to 100 years? Will the next war be fought over depleting natural resources? These questions of survival have been playing in different media. Forget about terrorism and nuclear proliferation. It is assumed that climate change and its consequences are the grave issues governments across the world will be dealing with in the coming years.

A Common Problem Demands A Common Solution

The Industrial Revolution is often held responsible for starting the problem of global pollution as it is understood today. The issue of development for a better lifestyle, driven by a consumerist outlook overlooked factors of sustainable development. Rampant and indiscriminate development not only led to inequities in the social structure but also led to a rise in the hazardous industrial chemical discharges and untreated waste products. The gradual and steady degradation of the environment has led to the position that the world is today.

Climate change is not a phenomenon that going to affect just you. It will have an impact on you, the person next to you and the one next to him as well. The present eco-system is seriously threatened by the crisis. Unfortunately, people have been living in denial of the reverse effects of unchecked development. Global warming has already started and there is no way to reverse it. Yes, there are means to alleviate the impact of climate change by the adoption of green and accessible technology. Already, countries have stepped up initiatives in combating the problem and lowering dependence upon GHG (Green House Gases) emitting fossil fuel.

Help From The Web:

* Eco blogs have come up with practical knowledge that allows people to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle without pinching the pocket or compromising on comfort and convenience.
* An Environmental blog is devoted to suggesting ideas and putting down opinions for a smarter and sustainable future.
* Innovations in technology and futuristic solutions for tackling environmental change are laid down in the plethora of environmental blogs that are available in the virtual world today.
* Most of them cover subjects on green building, energy efficient interior design, emerging sources of renewable energy and sustainable product design.

The civil society, conscious of the dangers of an ignoring the problem have set up multiple forums in the virtual world. The blogs highlight the possible solutions. Writing about the problems is passé. The present necessity is to find concrete sustainable solutions. These interactive forums help us realize what John F. Kennedy said years ago. “The supreme reality of our time is…the vulnerability of our planet.”
