Well, there sure is an awful lot of talk going around about Global Warming and the negative effects we, as humans, continue to have on our planet. Seems like every time you turn on the television or open up a newspaper, there it is, reduce this, recycle that, Go Green and Save our Planet. What are the facts. Is global warming a real danger, or just some man made hype about how we’re killing our planet, designed to get you to buy into the fear so ‘big business’ can sell you more stuff? Let’s examine the issues around Global Warming.
Is the earth really getting warmer?
Although local temperatures continue to fluctuate naturally, it has been documented, over the past 50 years the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. Experts think the trend is accelerating. The 10 hottest years ever recorded have all occurred since 1990. Scientists agree, unless we curb the production of global warming emissions, the average U.S. temperature could increase by 3 to 9 degrees by the end of the century.
What causes global warming?
Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun’s heat and causing the planet to warm-up. Burning fossil fuels at the World’s power plants are the largest sources of carbon dioxide pollution. Coal burning power plants in the U.S. alone help to produce over 2.5 billion tons of CO2 every year. Automobiles, the second largest source of the deadly CO2, combine to create nearly 1.5 billion tons annually.
The good news, technologies exist today to make cars that run cleaner and burn less gas. In addition, modernized power-plants and alternative sources of energy such as solar and wind are combining to help reduce CO2 emissions World Wide. The challenge is to make sure solutions are put to use.
Is global warming causing bad things to happen?
It seems, global warming is already causing damage in many parts of the United States. In 2002, Colorado, Arizona, and Oregon endured their worst wildfire seasons ever. The same year, drought created severe dust storms in Montana, Colorado and Kansas, and floods caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages in Texas, Montana and North Dakota. Snow accumulations have decreased almost 60% since the 1950′s and the winter seasons have grown shorter in many areas around the globe. In addition, extreme heat waves have caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe and more than 1,500 deaths in India. Perhaps the most tell tale sign of global warming has been the steady decrease in the Arctic;s perennial ice caps by the alarming rate of over 9% per decade.
Is there really cause for serious concern?
Global warming is a complex phenomenon, and its full-scale implications are hard to predict in advance. Each year, scientists learn more about how global warming is affecting the planet, and many agree that certain consequences are likely to occur if current trends continue. Melting glaciers, early snow melt and severe droughts will cause more dramatic water shortages in the American West and throughout the World. Rising sea levels will lead to coastal flooding on the Eastern seaboard, in Florida, and in other areas, such as the Gulf of Mexico. Warmer sea temperatures will fuel more intense hurricanes in the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts. While these are just a few of the impending environmental disasters we face if we don’t curb our green house gas production, the full implications are still unknown.
You see, despite what your personal thoughts and beliefs are regarding global warming, it appears to be a real issue with far reaching implications. Even if your not concerned with any of these disturbing global developments, you may want to consider looking into ways you can cut back on your personal CO2 production. It’s our planet, it’s our responsibility to take care of it.
