Profiling the Typical Environmentalist

Environmentalists are people who cares deeply about the environment. They are very outspoken and passionate about their cause. Most are just peaceful advocates who do their best to inform and educate the public about their passion.

Often environmentalists are wrongly perceived to be extremist because of their level of intensity and passion for their cause. They will protest, debate and even strike for the betterment of mankind. Environmentalists come from all walks of life, they can be your neighborhood everyday, average citizens or they could be your high profile politicians or well known celebrities.

Environmentalists are strong in their beliefs in protecting the environment and live their lives according to those principles. They will even adjust their lifestyles according to their beliefs. Many environmentalists do not even drive. They prefer to walk or carpool or take the mass transit. Those who do drive will use hybrid cars or alternative fuels. Many will abstain from certain foods, either because of the inhumane way they are caught or slaughtered. Many are conscientious around their homes as well, using alternative energy sources and energy efficient appliances. In addition they may grow their own food, use compost and recycle in every possible way.

Environmentalists campaign and advertise on behalf of their chosen organization. They will make an effort to educate and influence the general public on the issues closest to their hearts. The issues include harmful effects of global warming, on the changes to our climate and the depleting resources in the world we live in. Air pollution, soil erosion, deforestation, endangered species are some of the issues they hope to bring to the attention of others. Environmentalists are lovers of nature and wildlife. They have hobbies that relates to nature and usually love animals.

Some people view extreme environmentalists as ‘crazy’ or eccentric people who go overboard with their efforts. However, in most cases it is not true. Most environmentalists follow average lifestyles in regular neighborhoods and dress, act and look like normal people. Most environmentalists hope to make a difference in this world in their own way. Environmentalists are conscientious, good, responsible citizens. They advocate for the greater good and wants to do their part to make this world a better place.

Today some form of recognition is accorded to grassroots environmentalists. The Goldman Environmental Prize is the world’s largest prize honoring grassroots environmentalists. Founded in 1990 by Richard and Rhonda Goldman, the Goldman Environmental Prize awards annually US$125,000 to heroes from each of the world’s six inhabited continents.

Global warming is a threat that will affect generations to come. The atmosphere surrounding us that supports life is a God-given gift. It must be protected. We should be leaders in efforts to stop global warming, not resistant followers.

Erin Hunt is an avid writer and activist. She discovered that many are still unaware of the dangers of global warming and thus created a website to educate others on how they can play a role in the fight against global warming. Save the Polar Bears – Recycling Lessens the Effect of Global Warming

Polar Bears, are powerful swimmers crossing 20-30 miles of water at every swim, are drowning. Their big bodies weighing from 330-720 kg can no longer stand on the ice. Arctic ice is thinning, melting away. Their habitat is vanishing. They are now feeling the effects of global warming.

Mother Nature natural earth temperature is now increasing at an alarming rate. The mixture of gasses in the atmosphere creates a blanket that traps in heat necessary for life on earth to exist. These gasses primarily composed of carbon dioxide, water vapor and other trace gasses (methane, nitrous oxide, fluorinated gases) are not harmful, as long as they are kept within normal limits. But the trend of its increasing amounts in the atmosphere has caused chaos not only to polar bears and their habitat but to other animals as well. This scenario of increased temperature, having its effect globally is now called global warming.

But what has caused this sudden increase in gasses? More precisely, what has caused the amount of carbon dioxide to increase beyond the normal limits? What has happened to Mother Natures’ system of keeping the carbon dioxide levels in check?

Mother Natures’ plants and trees breath-in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. That is the biological carbon system. But with the large scale timber harvesting and the resulting deforestation, the system has broken down. Mankind has broken the system that Mother Nature has put in place. The industrial age has also brought us to where we are now and has increased levels of pollution and gasses in the air. Specifically carbon dioxide through the combustion of fossil fuel has added to increasing the worldwide air pollution levels.

It is therefore our responsibility to fix things and to clean up the pollution we have created. Countries have enacted laws to stop deforestation and funds have been allocated and made available for the planting of trees. As to fossil fuel combustion, alternative means for heating and energy resource are being studied and examined. Also, decades ago, a campaign was launched to help address this issue. It is the campaign using the three “R” concept – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

If businesses and households reduce, reuse and recycle their waste then incinerators and landfills will decrease in operation. The burning of wastes in incinerators and the decaying waste in landfills emit large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Of the three phrases in the campaign the last is the most popular. Recycling can be done by everybody. It is taught in schools and even preschoolers now know how to separate garbage and how to identify which containers are recyclables. If we all practice recycling, it will help a great deal in lessening global warming. It will also help rehabilitate the habitat of polar bears.

Nick Johnson is an environmentalist that knows the importance of Scrap Metal Recycling and electronics recycling such as in Atlanta Computer Recycling [http://www.usaalloys.com/atlanta-electronics-recycling-computer-recycling.php] centers.
