Green Living: Sorting Fake “Green” From Real “Green”
Have you noticed just how many suppliers are jumping on the ‘green‘ bandwagon these days? The trouble is, not all of them are truly eco-friendly. Some may include toxic ingredients, others may use harmful production methods, and some may use wasteful packaging or shipping practices. At EcoInhabit, we pore over every detail in our product lines to ensure that what we sell is really green. When a customer or company approaches EcoInhabit with the idea for a product to carry, we dive in and learn everything we can. We search the Internet, we talk to company reps and, most importantly, we test out and use the product ourselves. Sometimes we’ll even test similar products from two separate companies.
We want to be able to say confidently that each of our products is 100% safe and natural. In order to do that, we need to understand exactly what’s in it, how it’s made and where it’s made, and under what conditions. Only then can we understand the impact that using and making the product will have on our own health and the health of the planet.
Right now we’re looking to standardize a protocol for this kind of testing, so we’re researching other protocols that are already out there. Here’s what we’ve come up with so far:
Natural - We only sell products with 100% natural, non-toxic ingredients – from the soap that we put on our bodies to the paint that we put on our walls.
Manufacturing process - We will only sell products produced in a highly-sustainable, ethical and safe way.
Location - We consider not just how much energy is used to produce the product, but also to ship it to us. So we aim to sell mainly Canadian products, with some American products and just a couple from Europe or Asia. This helps reduce our carbon footprint.
Overall company values - Even if one of their products is relatively safe and natural, we won’t support a company who sells other products made with toxic chemicals, or with harmful manufacturing processes.

We think that last point is really important. We want to work with companies who walk their talk in everything that they do. Unfortunately, we’ve come across companies who have flat-out lied about their ingredients or materials. Of course once we discover that, or in some cases when a customer points it out to us, we stop selling it.
We do want to encourage everyone to ask questions and look carefully before making a purchase – both in our store and elsewhere. The small print is important. That’s why you’ll find magnifying glasses around our store and descriptions and icons online highlighting key product characteristics.
Congratulations on your commitment to buying green products. Please be sure they’re truly ‘green’ and not a wolf in ‘green’ clothing.
